The production is over. The play was up on the 9th and we finished on the 12th. This happened in November so it has been a long pause since then. Finally I decided to get down to finishing our final blog in regards to Spot The Odyssey. I have been reflecting on our process as a company and on my own personal journey as a director. I feel that we had a great run. The ending struck a distinct chord with the audience and I loved all the different reactions we received. The second performance was overcrowded and we nearly had to turn people away. This suggests that we should have had a third night or perhaps even ran the show for a longer stretch of time.
People came to me and shared positively about the show and about the performers. I remember that we had some struggles as a company though. It came as a surprise but we had one cast member drop out only a week before the production due to family circumstances. And at the same time, a different cast member fell down some stairs. She ended up with having a broken right hand and a concussion. Not to mention bruises and emotional scars to go along with that. However she didn't let that discourage her and we went on with the show regardless. I feel that we did extraordinarily well thinking of all these different circumstances. It just goes to show the strength of the company and the dedication of the group, that even with all that happening against us, we continued to supported each other as we pulled off a fearless performance. The show turned out to better than I could have imagined.
My role was challenging. I was over worried and needlessly stressed. I should have concentrated on having more fun. Early in the rehearsal process I dropped providing games for the company to play. I regret this decision because I feel we took it all too seriously. Being a director bears a lot of responsibility. If you're a director you shouldn't be scared of the pressure. Sometimes it creeps up and some times it can overwhelm you. To be a director you must be dedicated to the end result. Sometimes you must listen more to your company, and sometimes you must listen yourself. I suppose it's a struggle for every director. It's a fine line we walk. From being tough and ignorant to being weak and indecisive.
I feel I messed up by not having a session after the performance that just consisted of games and reflection. It just never happened. I feel disappointed in myself that I didn't persuade the group to do this. It would have been a nice way to say goodbye to the company.
The next time I do a community piece like this one, I will remember to do some things differently.
I now would like to thank all the company members that helped to create Spot The Odyssey and say farewell to those friends that we made. I hope they are now more confident in doing something similar in the future. I was overwhelmed with every individual's journey, and I could not have done this without them. I thank you again!
We hope to continue some group sessions over the next few months and it would be great to see you there. We'll keep you posted.
“What comes next?” I hear you ask....
Well... Right now we are planning to produce and create a show just for children. It's already in the making. We will tell you more of the details soon. I'm excited.
