I went to London! Just for a two day course, but I had so much fun. The course was by the legend Adrian Jackson MBE and it was on 'Jokering' a specific style of facilitation. I met some fantastic people and it was great to connect with fellow Theatre of the Oppressed enthusiasts. This course was practical so I had to get up and do things. I learned things and I'm still processing. I want more! We actually looked at a play written for Forum Theatre and I was cast as the bully. The piece was useful for our practice regarding facilitation. I actually did some decent acting towards the end of the event. I took Adrian a copy of my MA Dissertation for giggles and I do wonder if he will check it out.
I'm at Newcastle University currently studying a PhD in Invisible Theatre and I'm the Vice President of the student society called the 'Postgraduate Research Society'. The society was holding a welcome event for newcomers and around 60 people showed up. It was my job to support the society's event and I decided to run some image theatre as a game. Now interestingly image theatre has been used mainly as a tool for oppressed communities to express and analyse oppression, but here we are, in an academic context using the technique to build community and engage in each others stories. There is so much emphasis on postgraduates to study hard, work hard and achieve, that there is grievance in the community, however ultimately the ability to go into higher education is a unique privilege on offer to a select few. This event made me reflect on theatre techniques in academia. As the members didn't know they would be doing theatre and embraced the game, maybe there is more to discover in this area. It's a privilege to offer up a space for the community to develop. We have fantastic facilities to our disposal. We can access tea and coffee whenever necessary plus there's tons of information about other events and workshops happening posted around. ReCoCo is a great host and community hub offering up their space in kind. We are honoured to start back up with our in person sessions in this venue. So come along as there's still opportunities to get involved. We play games and share stories. Tell your friends about this event. 6-8 every Tuesday evening at Floor 4, No 1. Carliol Square, Newcastle City Centre, NE1 6UF. Listen up. Inter-Acting are seeking new members to address community concerns in a game based way. We use play to develop stories that are relevant to our lives. Original works that you take ownership of. We meet every week on a Tuesday 6-8 at RECOCO, No 1. Come have fun with us as we start our new chapter together. It's two hours in the workshop with a tea break in the middle. We guarantee that you'll be laughing, learning and smiling to yourself on your way home. Text: 07802583094 to get a weekly text reminder the day of the event. We look forward to meeting you. www.inter-acting.co.uk It is no secret that Inter-Acting has struggled since the pandemic hit. We were all nervous to meet up in public with the cases ongoing. So we transitioned online and we lost members because of the obvious fact that not everyone has access to the internet. Our membership was a mix of people, some with economic hardship. Developing an app for our members took a lot of focus and it was neglectful to use so much resources for something that not everyone in the community would benefit from. Our members expressed that an app was not so relevant for them at that time. So we are hoping to revisit the app one day soon. We should be proud though that we published a free app on both the app store and for android on Google Play. It had our own social media, quizzes and self tape challenges. Now things are more settled in the world, it seems like meeting up in person is something we can offer up again. We meet every Tuesday 6-8 at RECOCO that's No 1. Carliol Square, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 6UF.
I've been facilitating sessions with the Inter-Acting community group members for 3 months now. They are a great community of people, bringing with them a range of experiences.
In my sessions we have begun to explore some Theatre of the Oppressed techniques, such as Image Theatre, Cop in the Head, and Rainbow of Desires. And we're looking at the viability of publishing a piece that's interactive, with opportunities for the audience to directly engage within the story and to address the issues presented. The audience making their own suggestions for what they might do differently to change the outcome for the better. The group have been very open to trying new techniques, and the sessions have provided me as facilitator the opportunity to experiment with these games and exercises online via Zoom. I feel the sessions are providing people with an important moment each week to connect with others during lock down, to find creative expression for how people are feeling and what is on their minds. And importantly to be playful and have fun.' Rosa Stourac McCreery, Theatre facilitator, director and performer. Every week starts the same way:
'Say your name, give a sound and gesture to represent how you're feeling today. And we repeat that back to you as a group' You learn many different styles and types of acting. We also learn theatre theory and facilitation. 2 hours of learning about ourselves and learning about each other. Our group is like a small family, I was really pleased that we are carrying on the sessions online in spite of the current issues of the 'COVID -19' crisis. This is about so much more than just acting or working towards a performance. It has a social function to it. But most importantly, it has tea and biscuits for the break time in the middle."
